Summer 2023
Summer tips: staying comfortable in the heat
Unique warm-weather challenges, and how to get ahead of them.

For people with an ostomy, summer brings some unique challenges. Here are tips to help you stay comfortable and enjoy the season.
Hydration
Staying well hydrated is essential in hot weather to help prevent dehydration. Drink plenty of water through the day and carry a water bottle. Make sure you know the volume of water-based fluid you're recommended to drink daily.
Sun and heat
Protect the skin around your stoma from the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF — SPF 50 — to the area, and consider a stoma cover or wrap for extra protection.
Take care to protect the stoma from heat, direct sunlight and injury. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid excessive rubbing or pressure on the area.
Higher temperatures mean more sweating, which can affect how well your pouch adheres. A skin barrier seal or extended-wear adhesive helps keep it in place and prevents leaks.
Odors become more noticeable in the heat. Deodorizing drops or pouch deodorants help manage them.
Swimming and water activities
Choose a swimsuit that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Options designed for ostomy patients include one-piece suits with built-in pouches and high-waisted bikini bottoms. For water activities, consider a waterproof cover or a pouch cover made for ostomy bags — these protect the pouch from water and hold it in place.
Supplies
Make sure you have enough ostomy products for the length of your summer activities. Stock up on pouches, skin barrier products and other supplies before you head out. When travelling, pack extra supplies in your carry-on in case of delays or lost luggage.
Connect with others
Other ostomates and support groups are a good source of experience, tips and advice specific to your situation.
