New year: pause, reflect, and reset your routine

Small adjustments to leaks, skin irritation and stale routines.

A new year is a good time to pause, reflect and reset — especially when it comes to your ostomy care. If you've been getting by with small leaks, skin irritation, or routines that no longer feel quite right, January is a good opportunity to make simple adjustments that have a big impact on your comfort and confidence.

Your body changes, and so does your ostomy

Even small shifts in weight, activity level or skin condition can affect how well your pouching system works. Check in with yourself:

  • Are you getting the wear time you expect?

  • Have leaks, itching or redness become more common?

  • Does your pouch still feel comfortable and secure throughout the day?

If something feels off, it's worth addressing early — before minor issues become bigger problems.

Why people wait longer than they should

Many ostomy patients tell us they waited too long to ask for help. The common reasons:

  • Assuming discomfort or skin irritation is just part of having an ostomy

  • Sticking with the same products out of habit

  • Managing leaks quietly instead of troubleshooting them

You don't have to settle. Ostomy care should support your life, not limit it.

When a consult is worth it

  • Ongoing or worsening skin irritation

  • Frequent leaks, especially at night

  • Changes in stoma size, shape or output

  • Lifestyle changes — a new exercise routine, travel plans, seasonal changes

Early guidance can help prevent skin breakdown, reduce frustration, and restore confidence.

What a virtual consult can do

Telehealth makes expert support available without leaving home. An ostomy nurse can assess peristomal skin concerns, optimize pouch fit and product selection, troubleshoot leaks and wear-time issues, and provide personalized education and reassurance. Many patients find that proactive virtual check-ins help them avoid urgent problems altogether.

How often should your routine be reassessed?

Any time something changes — or at least once a year. A quick review can uncover small adjustments that make a big difference to comfort, wear time and skin health.
