Summer can be such a vibrant time. For ostomates, the trick is planning activities that are comfortable as well as enjoyable. Here are ideas for making the most of it.

Things to do

  • Swimming — refreshing and therapeutic. Consider a waterproof pouch cover or a swimsuit designed for ostomates for extra comfort and security.

  • Beach days — soak up the sun and relax by the water. Bring a beach chair or umbrella for shade, and a cooler with snacks and drinks.

  • Outdoor sports — hiking, cycling, golfing. Stay hydrated and listen to your body's signals to avoid overexertion.

  • Picnics and barbecues — choose foods that are easy on your digestion, and pack extra supplies just in case.

  • Gardening — therapeutic and rewarding, and you can scale the work to your comfort level.

  • Festivals and events — check accessibility ahead of time and plan for any supplies or accommodations you'll need.

  • Travel — a beach resort, a mountain retreat, a city break. Research ahead so you're comfortable getting there and back.

Stay hydrated

Summer heat makes this a priority. Carry a water bottle and sip regularly through the day. Ask your provider whether you're a good candidate for oral rehydration solutions such as DripDrop or Liquid IV, which optimize how well your body absorbs the fluids you drink.

Sun protection

Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and seek shade during peak hours. Make sure your stoma is covered when you're in the sun.

Connect with others

Consider joining an ostomy support group or an online community. Sharing experiences and tips with people in the same position is both helpful and reassuring.

Before you head out

Stay prepared with back-up pouching supplies, a filled water bottle, and a folding chair for your summer journeys. And take lots of photos.

Everyone's experience with an ostomy is unique, so listen to your body, talk to your healthcare provider, and adapt these ideas to your own needs.
